One day in Marrakech is tight but workable if you stay inside the medina, where the headline sights cluster within walking distance. This itinerary moves from a cool morning at Ben Youssef and the souks, through the southern palaces, to mint tea on a rooftop and the nightly theatre of Jemaa el-Fna. Everything below is walkable and real.

Start early at the 14th-century Medersa Ben Youssef, Morocco's largest former Quranic school, where a marble courtyard is ringed by carved cedar, stucco and zellij. Arriving near opening time means cooler air and the courtyard before the crowds.
From the medersa, drift south through the covered souks toward Jemaa el-Fna. The lanes group trades by craft — lanterns, leather, spices, dyed wool and carpets — with Souk Semmarine as the main artery. Getting pleasantly lost here is part of the day.
Break from the bustle at Le Jardin Secret, a restored riad complex on Rue Mouassine with an Islamic-style garden, an exotic garden and a tower to climb for rooftop views. It is right on the route between the souks and the square.

A short walk from the Bahia, beside the Kasbah Mosque, the Saadian Tombs hold ornate royal mausoleums rediscovered in 1917. The Chamber of the Twelve Columns, with its Carrara marble and muqarnas, is the highlight — expect a brief queue for that room.
Loop back past the Koutoubia, the 12th-century mosque whose 77-metre minaret defines the skyline. The prayer hall is for worshippers, but the surrounding gardens are open to all and make a calm, shaded spot before sunset.
End where the day's energy peaks: as the light fades, Jemaa el-Fna fills with food stalls, musicians, drummers and storytellers. Eat grilled skewers and harira from the stalls, or watch the spectacle from a rooftop with a glass of mint tea.
This whole loop stays within the medina and is doable on foot — roughly Ben Youssef to the souks to the southern palaces and back to the square. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, and use a map app, since the lanes are deliberately maze-like.
With time to spare before dinner, fit in a quick hammam or a mint tea at a Mouassine rooftop. If you would rather see the gardens, the Jardin Majorelle sits in Gueliz, a short petit-taxi ride beyond the medina walls.
You can see the highlights of the medina in a single well-paced day — Ben Youssef, the souks, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia and Jemaa el-Fna are all within walking distance. You will not have time for the gardens in Gueliz or a day trip, so save those for a second day if you can.
