Why Marrakech
We are a Marrakech operation first and foremost, and this is the city we live in and lead every day. Behind the famous ochre ramparts, the call to prayer, the haggle of the traders and the nightly drumbeat of Jemaa el-Fna braid together into one constant hum that becomes the soundtrack of any stay. Set aside a morning simply to get pleasantly lost between the Semmarine and Mouassine souks, the dyers' alley and the spice merchants; give an afternoon to the painted courtyards of the Bahia Palace, the hidden Saadian necropolis and the electric blue of the Jardin Majorelle. What seals Marrakech as a base is its reach: under ninety minutes from most European cities by air, an hour into the High Atlas at Imlil or Ourika, forty minutes to the lunar Agafay, three hours to the wind-scoured walls of Essaouira. Take a room in a medina riad, dine on a rooftop within sight of the Koutoubia minaret, and treat the red city as the hinge on which the rest of your Morocco turns.
What to see
As dusk falls the UNESCO-listed square erupts into smoke, gnaoua rhythm and rows of orange-juice carts; the Semmarine and Mouassine souks that ring it are best tackled slowly on a first morning, alongside a guide who can untangle the labyrinth for you.
Trace the carved cedar ceilings and zellige courtyards of the 19th-century Bahia, then duck behind the Kasbah mosque to the long-sealed Saadian necropolis — between them they hold the most exquisite tilework in Marrakech.
The cobalt-blue garden that Yves Saint Laurent saved from the bulldozers in 1980, set beside the museum charting the years he drew his collections here in the red city.
Marrakech's own pocket desert — a rumpled stone moonscape for a camel plod, a buggy run or a lantern-lit dinner as the High Atlas flushes pink, and the obvious answer when the real Sahara is simply too far.
Drive an hour south and the mountains close in: Berber hamlets, a tagine eaten with your feet dangling in the cold river, and the scramble up to the Setti Fatma cascades.

Three full days hits the mark: the medina and its souks, the headline palaces and gardens, and one half-day break out to Agafay or Ourika. Add a fourth and you can take a slow riad morning, linger in the gardens, or book a hammam before pushing on to the mountains or the coast.
It is. The medina is crowded but well patrolled, and the usual city instincts handle the rest — keep your phone and wallet tucked away in the narrowest souk lanes, settle taxi fares before you set off, and lean on a private driver after dark out in the new town.
Aim for spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November), when days sit at a comfortable 22–28°C and evenings cool off nicely — ideal for the medina and for Atlas day trips. Peak summer pushes past 40°C, and although winter days stay mild, the nights get genuinely cold, so always pack a layer.
