Why Essaouira

When the medina heat begins to wear thin, the natural move out of Marrakech is three hours west to Essaouira (Mogador on the old charts) — the country's easiest coastal escape and an ideal one- or two-night extension. Its 18th-century sea ramparts doubled as Astapor in Game of Thrones; its blue-and-white medina is compact, easy to walk and far mellower than Marrakech; and the breeze that never fully drops keeps the beach a year-round magnet for kite-surfers. The drive out follows the argan road, with a stop at a women's co-op, and the town opens onto the broader Atlantic coast running up toward the oyster lagoons of Oualidia.

What to see

Highlights of Essaouira.

01

The Skala ramparts

The Portuguese-era cannon walls striding above the Atlantic, ranked with brass guns and cast as the slaver city of Astapor in Game of Thrones.

02

The fishing port & grills

Point at the morning's catch on the quayside and watch it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — the freshest seafood anywhere in Morocco.

03

Argan co-ops on the road in

Pull in at a women's cooperative on the drive out from Marrakech to see argan oil cracked from the kernel and hand-pressed the traditional way.

04

Sidi Kaouki & the wider coast

Long, deserted surf beaches a short way south at Sidi Kaouki, and the oyster lagoon of Oualidia further up the coast to the north.

FAQ

Essaouiracommon questions.

Is Essaouira worth it as a day trip from Marrakech?+

An overnight wins hands down — three hours each way leaves barely four or five on the coast. Give it two nights and you can walk the ramparts at sunset, eat at the port and actually settle into the slower pace.

Can you swim at Essaouira?+

You can, but it stays breezy and the Atlantic runs cool the year round. For warmer, calmer water, drop south to Sidi Kaouki or carry on down the coast to Agadir.
