Why Casablanca
Casablanca is the country's biggest city and its principal international hub, which is why so many Marrakech itineraries land or depart here. This isn't the postcard Morocco of medinas and palm groves — it's a working modern metropolis of French-era art-deco facades, an Atlantic corniche and the staggering Hassan II Mosque rising straight from the sea. Most travellers simply pass through on the way to the red city, three hours south; for anyone with a few hours in hand we slot in a tightly focused half-day so the stopover actually earns its keep.
What to see
The world's third-largest mosque, partly cantilevered out over the Atlantic, and one of the very few in Morocco that non-Muslims may enter — guided tours run throughout the day.
Place Mohammed V, the white residential blocks of the French era, and the lovingly restored Cinema Rialto.
The Atlantic boardwalk, the beach clubs, and the sunset terrace at Rick's Café for a Casablanca-the-film moment.

For most leisure travellers, a half-day around the Hassan II Mosque and the art-deco centre is ample — then save your nights for Marrakech, Fes or Essaouira, which keep the atmosphere Casablanca trades away to be a working city.
Casablanca (CMN) offers the widest spread of long-haul flights; Marrakech (RAK) drops you closer to most itineraries. A favourite trick is the open-jaw: land at CMN, take in the mosque, and fly home from RAK at the end.
