What are the main routes from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Two overland lines carry travellers from Marrakech down to Merzouga. The classic — and the one most riads will book for you — runs south over the High Atlas: you climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, drop into Ouarzazate, then thread east through Skoura's palm groves, Boumalne and the twin Dadès and Todra gorges before reaching Erfoud and, finally, the dunes. Reckon on 560–580 km and 8–10 hours of seat time — which is exactly why nobody sensible does it in one go. An overnight at the gorges or in Ouarzazate breaks it cleanly.

The second line drops in from Fes through the Middle Atlas, past Midelt and down the dramatic Ziz Gorge to Errachidia and Erfoud. From Fes it is quicker on paper — roughly 6–7 hours — but it skips the kasbah country south of the Atlas entirely. Travellers stitching together a grand Morocco loop tend to roll down one way and back the other, weaving both the High and Middle Atlas into a single circuit that begins and ends in Marrakech.

How long does the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga take?

Driven flat out, the southern route is roughly 8–10 hours of pure motoring. In the real world it is never a single day. The Tizi n'Tichka climb out of Marrakech eats two hours on its own, and a worthwhile pause at Aït Ben Haddou — the famous kasbah 30 km west of Ouarzazate — adds another two. Most people therefore sleep at Ouarzazate (night one) and the gorges (night two) before the dunes on day three, or flip it: Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate first, then Todra.

The leanest workable split is two driving days. Day one: Marrakech to the Dadès Gorge by way of Ouarzazate, 5–6 hours once you factor the stops. Day two: Dadès down to Merzouga through Todra and Erfoud, another 4–5 hours. Stretch it to three days and the whole thing relaxes — you actually get to stand in each gorge rather than glance at it from the car window.

Is there a bus from Marrakech to Merzouga?

CTM and Supratours run daily coaches from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (3.5–4 hours) and from Marrakech to Errachidia (7–8 hours over the northern pass). What they do not run is a through service to Merzouga itself. From Errachidia you piece the last leg together by grand taxi — a shared taxi to Rissani, 40 km on, then another short hop or a camp pickup the final 20 km to the dunes. Door to door by public transport, the whole Marrakech–Merzouga chain runs 11–14 hours and asks for three or four vehicle changes. Doable, certainly, but it makes for a wearing day.

If you want the gorges as well, the bus network all but gives up. CTM can deposit you at Boumalne Dadès (5–6 hours from Marrakech), yet from there into the gorges and onward to the dunes it is grand taxi only — slow, and never quite on schedule. For any desert trip that takes in the southern route, a private driver earns its keep many times over.

What is the best way to get from Marrakech to Merzouga?

The road threads some of Morocco's most cinematic country — the switchbacks of the Tizi n'Tichka, the mud-brick towers of Aït Ben Haddou, the 'monkey fingers' rock folds above the Dadès, the 300-metre limestone walls of the Todra — and every one of those rewards stopping the car, which a coach simply will not do. A driver who runs this road for a living knows the viewpoints, can tell a genuine roadside co-operative from a tourist trap, and reads the final desert piste into the camp in the dark without blinking.

A four-day return from Marrakech to Merzouga and back usually lands at US$200–350 per car per day — driver, a private vehicle for one to four passengers, all fuel and tolls included; beds are extra. For Erg Chebbi a standard car handles the final approach fine. It is only the remoter Erg Chigaga, further west near M'Hamid, that genuinely demands a 4WD.

Can you fly from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Merzouga has no airport. The nearest runways with scheduled flights are Ouarzazate (OZZ), some 260 km to the west, and Errachidia (Moulay Ali Cherif, ERH), about 80 km north of the dunes. Both carry only thin domestic links from Casablanca on certain Royal Air Maroc schedules. For most visitors neither makes a credible substitute for driving — the timetables are sparse, and once you add the transfers at each end any time saved evaporates. The overland road is not a compromise here; it is the whole point of the trip.
