The short answer
Yes. Swimwear is entirely fine at a riad plunge pool, a riad roof terrace set up for sunbathing, or a hotel pool in Hivernage or the Palmeraie. These are private, enclosed spaces, and the medina's modesty norms don't apply in the same way. Just put something over it before you step into the lane outside.
In more detail
The line in Marrakech is between private and public space. Inside a riad's walls, guests swim and sunbathe as they would anywhere. Out on the street, the expectation of covered shoulders and knees is back.
In a small riad the pool is often in the central courtyard, overlooked by the rooms and the staff passing through. Most guests keep to a regular swimsuit there. If you are unsure what suits a particular riad, just ask at reception; they get the question all the time.
The same goes for desert camps in Agafay with pools and the beach in Essaouira: relaxed by the water, covered for the walk into town.
Good to know
- Pack a cover-up or a light kaftan for the walk from pool to street.
- On a shared roof terrace, check with the riad before sunbathing.
- A hammam has its own customs: see the hammam questions.
- Riad staff can tell you which hours the pool is quietest.
