The short answer
Five, for the five daily prayers, starting with fajr before sunrise and including the sunset call, maghrib. The times move with the sun through the year, so they shift a little every day. In the medina the call comes from dozens of minarets, a few seconds apart, and at sunset it sounds over the drums of Jemaa el-Fnaa.
In more detail
The five prayers are fajr before sunrise, dhuhr at midday, asr in the afternoon, maghrib at sunset and isha in the evening. The dawn call is the one visitors notice most, because it comes while the city is quiet.
The sunset call is one of the great moments of a Marrakech evening. From a rooftop terrace over the square, you hear it rise from the Koutoubia and the other minarets as the grills light and smoke drifts against the sky.
Visitors do not need to do anything when the call sounds. Carry on with what you are doing, keep your voice down if you are near a mosque, and avoid photographing people at prayer.
Good to know
- Ask your riad for a room away from the street if you sleep lightly.
- Be on a rooftop for the sunset call.
- Check prayer times locally; they change daily.
