Should I get an eSIM for Marrakech?

An eSIM is the easiest option for most visitors: install it at home, and it connects to a Moroccan network as you land at Marrakech Menara, with no SIM desk queue.

The short answer

An eSIM is the easiest option for most visitors: install it at home, and it connects to a Moroccan network as you land at Marrakech Menara, with no SIM desk queue. A local SIM bought at the airport or a shop in Gueliz is cheapest per gigabyte but needs your passport. Roaming on your home plan is simplest but usually costs most.

In more detail

Morocco has three national networks: Maroc Telecom, Orange and Inwi. 4G is fast and dependable across the medina, Gueliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie, and Maroc Telecom has the widest coverage. Signal fades high in the Atlas passes, on back tracks in Agafay and deep on the Sahara piste.

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Install the profile on your home Wi-Fi before you fly, because the setup needs a connection and airport Wi-Fi is patchy.

Data matters more in Marrakech than many places. WhatsApp is how riads, guides and drivers communicate, and you'll want your riad's walk-in directions the moment you arrive. Download the medina in Google Maps offline as a backup.

Good to know

  • Check your phone is eSIM-capable and unlocked.
  • Install before you leave home.
  • Choose a plan on Maroc Telecom if you're going into the mountains.
  • Most riads and cafés have free Wi-Fi.
