The short answer

Marrakech, like the rest of Morocco, uses the round two-pin European plugs, Type C and Type E, at 220 V and 50 Hz. Travellers from the UK need a Type G to Type C adapter. Travellers from the US need an adapter, and a voltage converter only for devices that run solely on 110 V.

In more detail

Most modern phone, camera and laptop chargers are dual-voltage and only need the plug adapter. Check the small print on the charger: if it says 100 to 240 V, you are fine. Hair dryers and straighteners are the usual exceptions, so check those before you pack them.

Type C plugs, the slim two-pin kind, fit both Type C and Type E sockets, so a Type C adapter is the one to buy. If you carry several devices, a small multi-socket extension from home lets one adapter charge them all.

If you are going on to a desert camp, charging is limited at most of them. Carry a charged power bank for your phone, which is also your map in the medina.

Good to know

  • Type C and Type E, 220 V, 50 Hz.
  • Bring a multi-socket strip for one adapter.
  • Pack a power bank for day trips and camps.
