The short answer

What you would wear for the medina: shoulders and knees covered, for men and women, and comfortable flat shoes. The Bahia, El Badi, the Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef and Le Jardin Secret are all inside the medina, a residential and religious neighbourhood. Gueliz, home to Jardin Majorelle and the YSL museum, is more relaxed.

In more detail

Footwear matters as much as cover. El Badi has uneven ground and steep rampart steps, the Saadian Tombs have a gravel garden, and medina lanes are often cobbled. Trainers or sturdy sandals are better than anything with a heel.

Heat matters too. El Badi and the Agdal Gardens have little shade, so a hat, sunscreen and water help in the middle of the day. A light scarf covers shoulders, keeps off the sun and is useful at the Lazama synagogue or any religious site.

At the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the synagogue, dress as you would for a place of worship. Nobody checks clothing at the gate, but modest dress is noticed and appreciated.

In Gueliz, at Jardin Majorelle and the YSL museum, dress is more relaxed, but modest clothing still looks right and is cooler in the sun.

Good to know

  • Carry a light scarf for religious sites.
  • Wear flat, closed shoes for El Badi's ramparts.
  • Bring a hat for sites with little shade.
