Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech by day

The short answer

Enough for the essentials. Day one: the souks early, the southern sights (Bahia, Mellah, El Badi, Saadian Tombs), and Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk. Day two: Jardin Majorelle on an early timed ticket, lunch in Gueliz, the Ben Youssef Madrasa or Le Jardin Secret in the afternoon, and a rooftop sunset. A day trip needs a third day.

In more detail

The plan works because it groups sights by area and keeps the busy ones early. The Bahia and the Saadian Tombs fill by mid-morning, and Majorelle's first slot of the day is the calmest. Book Majorelle online in advance.

Leave room. The heat of the afternoon, especially in summer, is a good time for a hammam or the riad pool, and the medina is best enjoyed with some unplanned wandering.

Check the day of the week. The Musée Yves Saint Laurent closes on Wednesdays, the Lazama synagogue on Saturdays, and on Friday many souk shops pause around the midday prayer. In Ramadan, sights keep shorter hours.

Good to know

  • Book Majorelle before you arrive.
  • Keep one evening for the square and one for a rooftop dinner.
  • Add a third day for the Atlas or the Agafay.
  • Start each day at opening time.
  • Group the sights by area to save walking.
