Why Dakhla
Dakhla is a peninsula town on Morocco's far-southern Atlantic coast, roughly 1,700 km south of Casablanca and 550 km south of Agadir, reaching out into a 40 km lagoon screened from the open ocean by a slender tongue of sand. The lagoon's flat, waist-deep water and relentless north-easterly trade winds (the alizé) have turned Dakhla into one of the world's foremost kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations, pulling riders from Europe, the Americas and further afield between November and April. Beyond the watersports the setting is striking: pink flamingos feed in the lagoon shallows, the hammada rolls out to the horizon in every direction, and the fish landed each morning at the simple port restaurants ranks among the best on the Moroccan coast.
What to see
The Dakhla lagoon serves up flat, shin-to-waist-deep water, a sandy bottom and the steady north-easterly alizé blowing 20–35 knots most mornings — conditions that let beginners progress fast and advanced riders drill freestyle and foiling without ocean swell to contend with.
Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) feed in the shallows of the southern lagoon all year, peaking in winter. A short 4x4 run south of town reaches the flats at Imlili, where hundreds of birds can be watched at close range.
Dakhla's fishing fleet lands sea bream, grouper, octopus and sea bass each morning. The plain port restaurants grill it to order, and the catch-of-the-day set menu is among the best-value meals anywhere in Morocco.
The hammada east of the lagoon breaks into crescent dunes reachable by 4x4; the vast, empty land at sunset — the lagoon glowing below — is the visual high point of any Dakhla stay.

Yes — the flat lagoon, sandy bottom and steady but unintimidating trade winds make Dakhla one of the best places on earth to learn. Most IKO-certified schools on the lagoon run 9–12 hour beginner courses, and students typically reach independent riding within a week.
November through April brings the most consistent wind (20–35 knots most days) and comfortable air temperatures of 20–26°C. May to October is quieter and lighter on wind, favoured by travellers after empty beaches and solitude rather than sport.
Yes — Dakhla is under Moroccan administration and one of the safest towns in the country. Security is visible, infrastructure has had heavy investment over the past decade, and the town hosts several thousand European visitors a year without incident.
