The short answer

Most visitors don't. Passport holders from the UK, Ireland, the EU and Schengen states, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many other countries enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days as tourists. You need a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Rules change, so check your own government's travel advice.

In more detail

Entry is a stamp at immigration at Marrakech Menara (RAK). There is nothing to file in advance for visa-free nationalities. Have your riad or hotel address ready for the arrival card, keep proof of onward or return travel handy as it is occasionally asked for, and make sure your passport has a blank page.

If your passport is not on the visa-free list, you may need a visa before you travel, arranged through a Moroccan consulate. Allow time for it.

To stay longer than 90 days, you apply for an extension at a local police station before your stamp expires. Leaving and re-entering is not guaranteed to reset the clock, as border officers have discretion.

Good to know

  • Six months' passport validity from arrival.
  • At least one blank page for the stamp.
  • Your accommodation address for the arrival card.
  • Check official advice a few weeks before you fly.
