The short answer

The walk to the first waterfall is a short, steep scramble over rocks, fine for most reasonably fit people in good shoes; allow about an hour up. Going on to the higher falls of the seven is harder and slippery, so a local guide is a good idea. Small children and anyone unsteady on their feet may prefer the riverside cafés.

In more detail

The trail starts in Setti Fatma village at the head of the valley and climbs past a series of cascades known as the seven waterfalls. The first fall is the one most day visitors reach. The upper falls need a guided clamber over boulders.

The rock is often wet, and in places you use your hands. Trainers or walking shoes with grip make a real difference; sandals do not.

If the climb is not for you, the valley still makes a good day. You can sit at a riverside café, visit a Berber home, or walk the easier lanes through the villages instead.

Good to know

  • A local guide at the falls is usual; plan to tip them.
  • Keep your hands free; use a small backpack.
  • Avoid the walk after heavy rain, when flash floods are a risk.
  • Bring a layer; it is cooler at the head of the valley.
