The short answer

Yes, if you want greenery, a river and village life rather than serious altitude. The Ourika Valley is the closest mountain escape from Marrakech, about 1 hour 15 minutes' drive to Setti Fatma, with Berber villages, riverside cafés and the Setti Fatma waterfalls at its head. It is busy at weekends, so a weekday is much calmer.

In more detail

The road follows the Ourika river up from the Marrakech plain past mud-brick hamlets, terraced fields and walnut groves. Cafés set tables right beside or over the water, and eating lunch with your feet near the cool current is a local habit on a warm day.

Our Ourika day stops at a women's argan cooperative, a traditional Berber home for mint tea, then walks up to the first of the Setti Fatma falls, a scramble of about an hour over rocks. Lunch by the river is optional. You are back in Marrakech by late afternoon.

The catch is popularity. Weekends bring Marrakchi families out for riverside picnics, and the lower falls get crowded. If you want quieter mountains and more height, Imlil is the better choice.

Good to know

  • Wear trainers or walking shoes with grip; the rocks by the falls are wet.
  • Carry cash for the riverside lunch and the local waterfall guide.
  • After summer storms, flash floods can occur; we check conditions on the day.
