The short answer

There is no direct train or bus, and Chefchaouen has no airport or railway. The usual way is to fly or take the train from Marrakech to Fes, then drive north about 3h30. Another is to fly to Tangier and drive about two hours. A private car the whole way takes seven to eight hours, so most people break the journey.

In more detail

The Fes route is the most common because Fes is worth a stop in its own right. Flights from Marrakech to Fes take about an hour. The train goes via Casablanca and takes most of a day. From Fes, a private driver or a CTM bus continues through the Rif to Chefchaouen.

The Tangier route suits travellers who are flying home from the north or arriving from Spain. The road from Tangier to Chefchaouen passes Tetouan and climbs into the Rif; it is about 110 km.

Driving straight from Marrakech goes up the motorway past Casablanca and Rabat, then inland. It works if you stop overnight in Rabat or Fes on the way, which turns the transfer into extra time in a second city rather than a long day in the car.

Good to know

  • Combine Chefchaouen with Fes rather than treating it as a separate trip.
  • Fly into Marrakech and home from Tangier to avoid backtracking.
  • Allow two nights in Chefchaouen to make the journey worthwhile.
