The short answer
Yes, if you pick one half of the country. A week from Marrakech comfortably covers the city plus the Sahara, or the northern imperial cities plus Chefchaouen. Trying to do both in seven days puts you in the car for too long. Choose the south for the desert, or the north for history and shorter drives.
In more detail
The southern week is the classic first trip. Two days in Marrakech, then over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, on through the Dades and Todra gorges to Erg Chebbi, a night in a desert camp, and back towards Marrakech. It has two long driving days, but the road is part of the experience.
The northern week is culture first. Two days in the Fes medina with a guide, a day for Meknes and the Roman ruins at Volubilis, two slow nights in Chefchaouen, then on through the Rif to Tangier. Most transfers are three hours or less, and the north is cooler in summer.
Either week can start in Marrakech and finish elsewhere. Flying in to Marrakech and out of Fes or Tangier saves the long drive back south, which on a week-long trip is a whole day returned to you.
Good to know
- South for the Sahara, north for medinas and milder summers.
- A private driver makes the long desert days far easier.
- Save the other half of Morocco for a second trip.
