The short answer

Yes, especially after the intensity of the Marrakech souks. Rabat is Morocco's calm capital, with UNESCO-listed monuments, the blue-and-white Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower, Roman and medieval ruins at the Chellah, and a daily rhythm that belongs to residents rather than tour groups. Two days fits neatly into a wider loop.

In more detail

Rabat is easy to reach. From Marrakech, the train runs to Casablanca in about three hours and the fast service continues to Rabat. By road it is about 330 km, roughly 3h30 on the motorway. From Casablanca it is about an hour.

The city suits travellers who want to see Moroccan life without the hard sell. The medina is navigable, and touts are far fewer than in Fes or Marrakech. Rabat is also one of the more relaxed cities for walking alone.

In a two-day visit, spend one morning at the Kasbah of the Udayas and its garden, an afternoon at the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and a second day at the Chellah and in the medina. Rabat then works as a link north to Meknes, Fes or Tangier.

Good to know

  • Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons.
  • Summer is far milder here than inland Marrakech.
  • Rabat makes a natural stop between Marrakech and the north.
