Why Dadès & Todra Gorges
On the long haul from Marrakech to the dunes, the kasbah road beyond Ouarzazate threads two of the most spectacular canyons in the country. The Todra Gorge squeezes to a slot 300 metres deep and barely 10 metres wide, a magnet for rock climbers; the Dadès snakes through rose-tinted rock past the curious 'monkey-finger' formations and the much-photographed hairpin switchbacks. Strung between them are palm oases, mudbrick kasbahs and the damask fields of the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna. These gorges are precisely why we stretch the desert run across two days instead of racing it — they are the scenery itself, not the empty gap between the highlights.
