Why Skoura
Skoura is a palm oasis and village some 42 km east of Ouarzazate on the kasbah road, set in the Drâa-Tafilalet region at around 1,200 m. The oasis holds hundreds of thousands of date palms watered by an ancient network of khettaras (underground channels), and tucked among the palmeraie stand some of the finest earthen kasbahs on the southern circuit — chief among them the Kasbah Amerdil (also spelled Amerhidil), a 17th-century Glaoui fortress that once featured on the 50-dirham banknote. Skoura is quieter and far less visited than Aït Ben Haddou yet architecturally every bit as rewarding; it works as a short detour or an overnight pause before the Dadès Gorge.
What to see
Kasbah Amerdil (Amerhidil), a 17th-century earthen fortress at the heart of the Skoura palmeraie, once appeared on the old 50-dirham note. It has been partly restored and welcomes visitors, and the surrounding palm oasis can be explored by bicycle or mule.
Skoura's oasis is kept alive by a centuries-old web of khettaras — underground gravity-fed channels — that carry High Atlas snowmelt to the palms. Guided walks through the palmeraie unpack the traditional hydraulic engineering still working today.
Two more restored earthen kasbahs in the oasis — Ben Moro ranks among the oldest in the region, while Dar Ahlam has become an award-winning boutique property with a superb kitchen.
Skoura marks the western end of the rose-valley corridor; come in from the east in May and you pass fields of damask roses bound for the rosewater, perfume and distilleries of Kelaat M'Gouna.

Yes — the Amerdil kasbah and a palmeraie bike tour add a rewarding, completely different stop between Ouarzazate and the Dadès Gorge. Most travellers pass through in 2–3 hours; an overnight at a kasbah guesthouse rewards anyone who lingers.
Aït Ben Haddou is more dramatic and better known, helped by its film credits. Skoura is quieter, greener thanks to the oasis, and architecturally more intimate. Serious kasbah enthusiasts do both; visitors short on time should prioritise Aït Ben Haddou.
