Why Ifrane
Ifrane is a planned town at 1,665 m in the Middle Atlas, laid out by the French protectorate in 1929 as a hill-station retreat on the model of a Swiss Alpine village — its red-roofed chalets, trimmed parks and stone fountains make it the most architecturally surprising town in Morocco. It lies within the Ifrane National Park, whose old-growth cedar forests are among the largest left in North Africa and shelter one of the world's most southerly wild populations of Barbary macaques. The neighbouring ski resort of Michlifen, at 2,000 m, draws dependable snow from December to February, which makes Ifrane Morocco's main winter-sports base.
What to see
The forests around Azrou, 17 km south of Ifrane, hold the most accessible population of Barbary macaques in Morocco — semi-habituated troops cross the cedars at road level and can be watched from the verge. Don't feed them.
Waymarked trails through cedar, holm-oak and juniper forest, with the lakes at Dayet Aoua and Dayet Afourher pulling in migratory waterbirds each spring. The 125,000-hectare park is one of the finest birdwatching sites in the country.
Morocco's main ski area, 12 km from Ifrane at 2,000 m — a modest resort of four runs and a chairlift, open December–February. It draws Moroccan families and anyone after an offbeat winter itinerary.
Ifrane's colonial-era centrepiece is a carved stone lion in the central park, by tradition the work of a German prisoner of war. The town's tidy, green streets and alpine architecture make a startling, fascinating contrast with anywhere else in Morocco.

The French colonial administration laid out Ifrane in 1929 as a summer retreat and deliberately styled it on the Swiss and French Alps — Alpine chalets, steep tiled roofs, trimmed parks and stone fountains. The cedar forests and winter snow only deepen the resemblance.
The surest spot is the cedar forest around Azrou, 17 km south of Ifrane on the N13. Troops of macaques are regularly out at road level, especially in the morning, and a 30–60 minute stop is usually enough to find them.
Yes — the cedar forests stay cool and green, the national-park lakes are lovely for walks and birdwatching, and the altitude keeps Ifrane 10–15°C cooler than Fes or Marrakech. It makes an excellent one-night stop on a Fes–Marrakech overland route.
Yes — Michlifen, near Ifrane, and Oukaimeden, in the High Atlas above Marrakech, are the country's two main ski areas. Michlifen is the easier reach from Fes, Oukaimeden from Marrakech. Both are small by European standards, but the experience is a genuinely unusual one.
