Why Meknes
Meknes is the most overlooked of Morocco's four imperial cities, all too often skipped on the dash between Fes and the coast. The 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail built it to rival Versailles, and he left behind monumental gates, the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a lived-in medina that draws a fraction of the crowds you'll meet elsewhere. From Marrakech it usually comes bundled with Fes on a northern leg, and it makes the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hill town of Moulay Idriss, both half an hour distant.
