The quiet imperial city of Moulay Ismail — monumental gates, cavernous granaries, and Roman Volubilis just a short drive away.

Meknes is the most overlooked of Morocco's four imperial cities, all too often skipped on the dash between Fes and the coast. The 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail built it to rival Versailles, and he left behind monumental gates, the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a lived-in medina that draws a fraction of the crowds you'll meet elsewhere. From Marrakech it usually comes bundled with Fes on a northern leg, and it makes the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hill town of Moulay Idriss, both half an hour distant.

    Widely held to be the finest gate in all Morocco — a towering screen of green-and-white zellige and carved stone framing the way into the imperial city.
