Why Ouzoud Falls

The Cascades d'Ouzoud are the loveliest waterfalls in the country and the most rewarding nature day out of Marrakech — about two and a half hours north-east in the Middle Atlas. The river plunges 110 metres in three tiers into a green gorge, often flinging a rainbow across the afternoon spray. A shaded path zigzags down past olive groves and old water mills (ouzoud is Berber for olives), troops of wild Barbary macaques work through the trees beside you, and small boats ferry visitors across to the foot of the falls. It's a complete break from the red city's heat and dust, and comfortably done in a single day.

What to see

Highlights of Ouzoud Falls.

01

The main cascades

The 110m three-tier fall thundering down into its pool — walk to the base or hop one of the little boats out into the spray.

02

Barbary macaques

Wild, habituated monkeys make their home in the olive and oak woods along the path — enjoy them from a distance and keep your snacks zipped out of sight.

03

Gorge walk to the El Abid river

A gentle trail continues below the falls into a green river gorge lined with riverside cafés and quiet pools for a swim.

FAQ

Ouzoud Fallscommon questions.

Is Ouzoud worth a day trip from Marrakech?+

Yes — it's the most rewarding nature day from the city: dramatic falls, wild monkeys and a green gorge, a total contrast to the medina and the desert. Leave early to reach the base before the afternoon crowds build.

How long is the drive to Ouzoud from Marrakech?+

Around two and a half hours each way. A private day trip leaves you several hours at the falls plus time for a lunch above the cascades before heading back by evening.
