Things to do in Marrakech, from first light to after dark

Marrakech runs on the sun. Balloons rise at dawn, the medina is best before the midday heat, the Agafay and the walls glow late in the afternoon, and the square comes alive after dark. Scroll through the day and the sky changes with it.

Marrakech activities, from sunrise to night

Time of day: 05:30

  1. 05:30 · Before dawn

    Hot-air balloon

A pre-dawn pickup, a launch from the countryside outside the city, and the sun coming up over the Atlas from high above the palms and villages.

Honestly: Flights depend on the wind and are cancelled at short notice. Book early in your trip so there's a spare morning.

  2. 08:00 · Morning

    Camel ride in the Palmeraie

An hour or two among the palms on the city's edge, usually with tea in a village house along the way.

Honestly: This is palm groves, not desert. Ask how the camels are kept, and walk away from any that look thin or sore.

  3. 10:00 · Mid-morning

A medina walk with a licensed guide

A morning of the madrasa, the souk lanes, a fondouk and the stories the walls don't tell you.

Honestly: Licensed guides carry an official badge. 'Guides' who approach you in the street are unlicensed, which is illegal.

  4. 12:00 · A whole day

    The High Atlas

Berber villages, walnut groves and rivers about an hour to an hour and a half from the square, in the Ourika valley or around Imlil.

Honestly: Some Atlas villages are still rebuilding after the 2023 earthquake. Going with local guides keeps money in the valleys.

  5. 15:00 · Afternoon

Quad or buggy in the Agafay

Dirt tracks through the stone desert, then a stop for tea as the light turns.

Honestly: Ask for helmets, a briefing and a guide riding with the group. Midday in summer is brutal, so go late.

  6. 17:30 · Late afternoon

    A calèche around the walls

A horse-drawn carriage from the Koutoubia, around the ramparts and through the gardens as the walls go pink.

Honestly: Agree the route and price before you climb in. Drivers should have an official fare card; ask to see it.

  7. 20:00 · After dark

    The city after dark

Gnawa music in the square, a rooftop over the Koutoubia, or a slow walk through the souks as they light up.

Honestly: The medina is lively until about midnight. After that, take a petit taxi to Gueliz or Hivernage rather than walk the dark derbs.

Things to do in Marrakech: FAQ

What are the best activities in Marrakech?

The classics, in the order of a day: a sunrise hot-air balloon, a camel ride in the Palmeraie, a guided medina walk, a day in the High Atlas, a quad or buggy in the Agafay in the afternoon, a calèche round the walls at sunset, and Jemaa el-Fnaa after dark.

What time does the hot-air balloon go up in Marrakech?

Flights launch around sunrise, so pickup is often before dawn, between about 4:30 and 6:30 am depending on the season. Flights depend on the wind and can be cancelled at short notice, so book one early in your stay.

Is Marrakech good for active travellers?

Yes. The High Atlas is about an hour to an hour and a half away for day hikes around Imlil or in the Ourika valley, the Agafay has quad, buggy and camel trails, and the Palmeraie suits cycling and riding. Avoid the midday heat from June to September.

What should I avoid doing in Marrakech?

Don't pay to photograph chained monkeys or snakes in the square, don't follow unofficial 'guides', and don't ride camels or horses that look unwell. Don't do a quad tour without a helmet and a briefing. And don't plan a desert overnight in the Sahara as a day trip: it's a long drive away.

Want the balloon, the Atlas and the Agafay in one plan?

Tell us your dates and pace. We'll line up the early pickups, the drivers and the guides, with a spare morning in case the balloon is grounded, and quote it all in writing.
