The short answer

Traditional public hammams are not mixed. Men and women bathe separately, either in separate sections with their own doors or at separate hours or days. Spa hammams in riads and hotels are private and run their own arrangements, so ask the spa how it works before you book.

In more detail

Every medina quarter traditionally has its own hammam, and it is as much a social place as a bath. Neighbours trade news there, brides are prepared there before a wedding, and women in particular spend long, unhurried afternoons together. That is why the separation matters to the people who use it.

Local hammams are busiest on Thursdays and Fridays before Friday prayers. If you want a quieter first visit, go on another day, and in winter late afternoon is the warmest place in the city to be.

For women travellers, a female guide can take you to the women's side of a neighbourhood hammam, which a male guide cannot. It is one of the most local experiences in Marrakech.

Good to know

  • Check the hours for your side before you go.
  • Avoid Thursday and Friday if you want it quiet.
  • Ask a spa hammam how it handles couples.
  • Bring flip-flops and a towel whichever side you use.
