The short answer

Yes. A Palmeraie camel ride is one of the gentlest family outings from Marrakech: a slow walk along sandy tracks under the palms, close to the city, often with a stop for mint tea in a Berber tent. Younger children can often ride with a parent or beside a handler. Check any minimum age with the operator.

In more detail

A typical ride lasts about one to two hours and is often timed for sunset. Ask the operator about a shorter ride for small children before you book.

Be clear about what it is. The Palmeraie is a palm grove with tracks, not sand dunes. For a desert landscape, the Agafay stone desert is about 40 minutes away and its camel treks usually last twenty minutes to an hour. Real dunes mean the Sahara, a much longer trip.

Bring hats, sun cream and water. For a family, the Palmeraie is the easy option: no long drive, a gentle pace and a ride far less demanding than a multi-day desert trek.

Many families pair it with a lunch or a swim in the Palmeraie, where several resorts sell day passes, so the outing fills a relaxed half-day rather than a whole one.

Good to know

  • Ask for a shorter ride for young children.
  • Go late afternoon for cooler air.
  • Bring hats and water.
