Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech by day

The short answer

Yes. Moroccans dote on children, and Marrakech has gardens to run in, calèche rides, the acrobats and storytellers of Jemaa el-Fnaa and easy escapes to the Atlas foothills and the Agafay desert. The things to manage are the summer heat, the crowded medina lanes and busy roads. Plan days around a midday break and a pool.

In more detail

The welcome is the first surprise. A family walking the medina is met with smiles and small kindnesses far more often than hassle, and riad staff tend to be delighted by children. A courtyard riad, ideally with a plunge pool or garden, gives you a calm, enclosed base to come back to at the end of a busy morning.

There is plenty to do. Jardin Majorelle is compact and shaded, with cacti, bamboo and pools of koi. At the Menara Gardens families picnic under the olive trees by the great basin. Le Jardin Secret has a tower to climb for rooftop views. A green calèche loop of the ramparts saves tired legs. In the early evening, Jemaa el-Fnaa's drummers, acrobats and storytellers fascinate children of every age.

The pressure points are physical. Marrakech afternoons can top 40°C in summer, the medina lanes are narrow and busy with mopeds and handcarts, and crossing big roads needs care. Sightsee in the cooler morning, rest in a shaded garden or pool over midday, and head out again as the city cools.

We plan family trips privately, so the pace is yours. Tell us the children's ages when you ask for a quote, and we can arrange child safety seats, family-room riads and age-appropriate activities.

Good to know

  • Book a riad or hotel with a pool, and check the pool depth.
  • Plan mornings out, a midday rest, and evenings at the square.
  • Carry water and sun hats everywhere.
  • Keep a firm hold of small hands in the souks and the square.
