The short answer

You can reach the dunes at Merzouga in two days, but you will spend most of both days in a car and get very little desert. Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, so we plan the Sahara as 3 days or more. With only two days, the Agafay stone desert or Zagora is the honest alternative.

In more detail

The road to Erg Chebbi runs over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, down to Ouarzazate and east through the Dadès and Todra valleys. Our transfer data puts it at about 8 hours 30 minutes of driving each way before you stop for a single photo. On a two-day trip that means a dawn start, arriving at the dunes around sunset, one night in camp, and the whole road back the next day. Our own desert guide says it plainly: a 2-day trip reaches Merzouga, but the return is punishing.

Three days is the standard shape. Day one crosses the Atlas, with a stop at Aït Ben Haddou, and sleeps in the Dadès. Day two runs through the Todra gorge to Merzouga for the camel ride and the camp. Day three is sunrise on the dunes and the drive home. Four or five days let you stop properly in the gorges and soften the return.

If two days is all you have, there are two fair options. Zagora, in the Draa valley, is about 6 hours of driving and has smaller dunes nearby, so an overnight there works. The Agafay is about 40 minutes from Marrakech: no sand dunes, but a real desert camp and an Atlas sunset with no long road at all.

Good to know

  • Two days: choose Zagora for sand, or Agafay for an easy night.
  • Three days: the shortest trip to Merzouga we would plan.
  • Four or five days: time to stop at Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges.
