The short answer
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, and our transfer data puts the drive at about 8 hours 30 minutes of road time each way on the classic route over the Tizi n'Tichka. That is before stops. Almost nobody does it in one go: we split it over two days with a night in the Dadès or Ouarzazate.
In more detail
The classic line climbs out of Marrakech to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, drops to Ouarzazate, then runs east through the Skoura palm grove, Boumalne, the Dadès and Todra gorges, and Erfoud to the dunes. The climb over the Atlas alone takes a good two hours. Add an hour at Aït Ben Haddou and lunch, and a single-day run becomes very long.
The usual split is Marrakech to the Dadès gorge on day one, then the Todra gorge and on to Merzouga on day two, arriving in the afternoon for the camel ride out to camp. The road is paved all the way to the edge of Erg Chebbi, so a 4x4 is not needed on this route.
The way back can be the same road or a different one. Some loops return north through Rissani and the Ziz valley, or carry on to Fes through the Middle Atlas, about 470 km and 6 hours 30 minutes from Merzouga. Merzouga has no airport; the nearest flights land at Errachidia, which then needs a road transfer.
Good to know
- Leave Marrakech early to reach Aït Ben Haddou before the midday groups.
- Plan to be at each night's stop before dark on the mountain sections.
- In winter, ask your driver to check the pass the day before.
