The short answer
Yes, if you know what it is: Morocco's main beach resort, not a historic city. Agadir offers a long, swimmable bay, reliable sunshine, family-friendly hotels and good excursions to the Taghazout surf coast, Paradise Valley, the Souss-Massa birdlife and Taroudant. Anyone expecting the medinas of Marrakech or Fes will be disappointed.
In more detail
The 1960 earthquake destroyed the old town, and modern Agadir was built around the seafront. Above it, Oufella Hill keeps the ruins of the old kasbah and a wide view of the bay, now reached by cable car. The Medina Polizzi is a modern reconstruction of a traditional medina, well done and worth an hour, but not a historic quarter.
Agadir earns its place as a base. Taghazout is about 20 km north. Paradise Valley, a pink granite gorge with rock pools in the Anti-Atlas foothills, is a lovely half-day. Souss-Massa National Park to the south shelters the rare bald ibis. Taroudant, with its intact ramparts and relaxed medina, is about 80 km east.
From Marrakech, Agadir is about 250 km, roughly three hours on the motorway. Many families do Marrakech first and unwind on the Agadir coast afterwards.
Good to know
- Agadir is one of the easiest places in Morocco to travel with small children.
- Eat at the port fish market rather than the hotel buffet.
- Fly home from Agadir to avoid the drive back.
