Why Taroudant
Taroudant spreads across the broad Souss plain at the foot of the High Atlas, about 80 km east of Agadir and 230 km south of Marrakech. Its Saadian-era ramparts — some 7.5 km of terracotta walls broken by five gates — rank among the best-preserved in the country, and the city earns its 'little Marrakech' tag through its busy souks, tanneries and foundouks, set in a far calmer mood than the original. The Souss valley around it grows Morocco's finest argan, almonds, saffron and citrus; and the Jbel Sirwa, a 3,304 m volcanic massif to the north-east, is the gateway to multi-day rose-valley treks.

Berber and Arab souks
Two separate market quarters — the Arab souk for spices, textiles and leather, the Berber souk for crafts, silver jewellery and raw argan — and almost none of the tourist pressure you feel in Marrakech.
Tioute Kasbah and palmery
A 17th-century Glaoui kasbah, now a guesthouse, ringed by a large date-palm oasis 37 km east of town — the setting for several French-language films shot in the region.
Jbel Sirwa trekking
The volcanic massif north-east of Taroudant — a quiet 5–7 day traverse through Berber villages, rose gardens and almond groves, finishing at the Draa Valley, and one of Morocco's most rewarding off-the-beaten-track treks.

Why is Taroudant called 'little Marrakech'?+
The nickname rides on the earthen ramparts, the working souks and the ochre palette — Taroudant feels like a smaller, calmer, far less touristed version of the imperial city. It shares the same Saadian era and the same Souss cultural roots, but runs at a fraction of Marrakech's pace.
Is Taroudant worth the detour from Agadir?+
Firmly yes if you have a day or more to give it. An hour from Agadir, it serves up a completely different Morocco — a living walled city with authentic souks rather than a beach resort.
Can you drive the Tizi n'Test pass between Marrakech and Taroudant?+
Yes — the P2017 over the Tizi n'Test (2,092 m) is one of Morocco's great mountain roads, snaking through the High Atlas with spectacular views and the Tin Mal mosque along the way. It asks for a driver confident on mountain roads, so we always put a local driver on this route.
What is the best time to visit Taroudant?+
October to April, while the heat stays manageable and the Atlas wears its snow. January and February bring almond blossom to the surrounding valleys; the saffron harvest falls in November.
