The short answer
Yes, the square has been renovated in sections through 2025 and 2026, and the work was reported in its final phase in June 2026. It stays open throughout, because the work moves sector by sector. The project brings new stone paving, a garden, a calèche station, a tourist kiosk and accessible toilets.
In more detail
The work is run by Al Omrane Marrakech-Safi. Because it goes sector by sector, you can still walk the square, eat at the stalls and watch the performers, but parts of it may be fenced off on the day you visit.
The food stalls are changing too. New food and juice carts arrived in spring 2026, and a tender to make and install new restaurant stands was published in September 2026. No installation date has been given, so the layout of the night market may look different from photos you have seen.
None of this affects the reason to go. The storytellers, musicians and evening crowds are still there.
Good to know
- Don't rely on old maps for stall numbers.
- Check on the day which sections are fenced.
- Taxis still drop at the Koutoubia end.
- Arrive about an hour before sunset to watch the stalls go up.
- Watch from a rooftop terrace over the square for the full view.
