The short answer

Yes. Marrakech is the easiest Moroccan city for a first visit: tourism is its core industry, English is widely spoken in the trade, it has more direct flights than Fes, and it is the natural base for the Atlas, the Agafay desert and the long road to the Sahara. Fes rewards a second trip, or a longer first one.

In more detail

Compared with Fes, Marrakech's medina is easier to navigate and has more of the comforts first-timers like: rooftop restaurants, small riads with English-speaking staff, and the modern quarters of Gueliz and Hivernage when you want a break from the lanes. Fes is quieter, older-feeling and more devout, with fewer guardrails for visitors.

Marrakech's other advantage is reach. Imlil, at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, is about 60 km and 1 hour 30 minutes by car; the Ourika Valley about 1 hour 15; the Agafay stone desert about 40 minutes. A week can be city, mountains and desert without changing hotel.

If you have ten days or more, pairing the two cities is the classic route: a few nights in Marrakech, then Fes, with the desert in between.

Good to know

  • First trip, under a week: base in Marrakech.
  • Ten days or more: add Fes and the Sahara.
  • Arrive with your first night and transfer arranged.
