The short answer
Yes, if you want an imperial city without the crowds of Marrakech or Fes. Meknes, the least visited of the four imperial cities, has the Bab Mansour gate, the granaries and stables of Sultan Moulay Ismail, a manageable UNESCO medina, and Volubilis, Morocco's finest Roman site, about half an hour away. It rewards an overnight more than a quick stop.
In more detail
Moulay Ismail ruled from 1672 to 1727 and built Meknes on a monumental scale to rival the European courts of his day. The gates, the long walls and the Heri es-Souani granaries are his legacy, and they are why the city feels so different from the narrow lanes of Fes.
The medina moves at a gentle pace after Fes and is easier to walk alone. Fewer tourist-facing businesses also keep things quieter in the evenings.
From Marrakech, Meknes is about 470 km, roughly 5h30 by motorway via Casablanca and Rabat. Most travellers reach it from Fes, about an hour away, or include it on the drive between Rabat and Fes.
Good to know
- Spend the night if you want the medina without day-trippers.
- Pair it with Volubilis and Moulay Idriss.
- Spring and autumn are best; summer afternoons are hot.
