The short answer
Yes. Taghazout, a small fishing and surf village about 19 km north of Agadir, has plenty of surf schools, and spots such as Hash Point and the beach break in Taghazout Bay suit beginners in small swells. Its famous Anchor Point is a powerful right-hander for experienced surfers, at its best from October to April.
In more detail
Taghazout found surf fame in the 1970s and has grown into Morocco's leading surf destination while keeping a village feel. The yoga-and-surf camp scene makes it unusually sociable, which suits solo travellers.
Beginners should start where the waves are gentle and leave the point breaks to experienced riders. Summer brings smaller, friendlier waves at the easier spots; winter swells are what make Anchor Point famous. Imsouane, about 1.5 hours up the coast, has one of Africa's longest waves and makes a good day out for improvers.
From Marrakech, the usual route is to drive to Agadir, about three hours, then on up the coast road, about 30 minutes. Essaouira is about 175 km north, so a week on the Atlantic can combine the two: Essaouira for the town, Taghazout for the surf.
Good to know
- Check that your travel insurance covers surfing.
- Expect to need a wetsuit; the Atlantic here is cool.
- Paradise Valley inland makes a good rest-day trip from the coast.
