Taghazout is Morocco's bohemian surf village — a crescent bay of point breaks, argan oil and Atlantic sunsets a short hop north of Agadir.

Taghazout is a small fishing-and-surf village on the Atlantic coast, 19 km north of Agadir, wrapped around a crescent bay between two headlands. It found international surf fame in the 1970s as a stop on the overland hippie trail and has since grown into Morocco's foremost surf destination without shedding its village feel. Its marquee break, Anchor Point, is a world-class right-hander at its best from October to April; Hash Point and Panorama hand out more forgiving intermediate waves. Inland, the argan forests of the Souss-Massa region yield much of the world's argan oil, pressed in women's cooperatives dotted along the coast road.

  1. Anchor Point surf break

    A long, peeling right-hander over a rocky reef — one of Africa's finest point breaks, at its best October–April when North Atlantic swells run 1.5–3 m.

  2. Surf schools and intermediate waves

    Hash Point and Panorama serve up mellow, learner-friendly waves, and several licensed surf schools in the village run daily lessons for beginners and improvers the year round.

  3. Argan oil cooperatives

    Women's cooperatives on the N1 coast road south of Taghazout hand-press cold-extracted argan oil; a visit takes in a short demonstration and the chance to buy straight from the producers.

  4. Paradise Valley

    A 35 km run inland into the Anti-Atlas gorges, ending at a chain of turquoise rock pools and waterfalls below a palm oasis — the best inland half-day from the surf coast.

Is Taghazout good for beginner surfers?
Yes — Hash Point and Panorama inside the sheltered bay throw up gentle, consistent beginner waves, and licensed surf schools run year-round. Anchor Point is expert-only, but newcomers can watch it work from the headland.
What is the best time to surf in Taghazout?
October through April brings the most consistent North Atlantic swells — averaging 1.5–2.5 m with offshore winds most mornings. May–September turns flatter and is better suited to swimming and snorkelling.
How far is Taghazout from Agadir?
Just 19 km, around 30 minutes by car. It works as an easy day trip from Agadir, but rewards a multi-night stay far more: the light over the bay at dawn and dusk is remarkable, and the best waves come early.
Is there good food and nightlife in Taghazout?
The village does excellent casual rooftop cafés and surf-lodge restaurants plating up fresh fish and Moroccan food. It's a quiet place, not a nightlife hub — for bars and a wider choice of restaurants, head into Agadir.
