The short answer
Yes. Tangier has changed from a faded, edgy port into one of Morocco's most rewarding cities, with a restored kasbah, a rebuilt seafront and a proud literary history. It deserves at least one night and ideally two. It works well as the northern end of a trip that starts in Marrakech, and as the gateway to Chefchaouen.
In more detail
Spain sits across the Strait of Gibraltar, about 14 km away at its narrowest, and is visible from the kasbah on a clear day. Fast ferries cross to Tarifa. That makes Tangier the first taste of Morocco for many travellers coming from Spain, but a day trip from Tarifa barely scratches the surface.
Spend time in the kasbah and its museum, the Grand Socco square at the edge of the medina, and the cafés of the new town. Out of town, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules make an easy half-day where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic.
From Marrakech, Tangier is about 580 km, roughly six hours on the motorway, or a train journey via Casablanca on the Al Boraq high-speed line. Chefchaouen is about two hours south by road, and Fes about three. Flying into Marrakech and home from Tangier avoids the long drive back.
Good to know
- Spring and autumn give the clearest light over the Strait.
- Tangier's summers are much milder than Marrakech's.
- Pair Tangier with Chefchaouen and Asilah on the Atlantic coast.
