The short answer
Early morning. Most palaces and tombs open at about 09:00 and fill with tour groups by mid-morning, and the souks are calmest from about 09:30 to 11:30. Rest in the middle of the day, especially in summer, then go back out in the late afternoon for gardens, ramparts and rooftops, and to Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk.
In more detail
Some sights reward a later visit. The Ben Youssef Madrasa is quieter after 17:00, El Badi's ramparts look best in late-afternoon light, and the Maison de la Photographie's rooftop is at its best near sunset. Menara is lovely on a winter afternoon, when the Atlas behind it is snowy.
The day has a rhythm. Bread and breakfast from about 07:00, shutters up from about 09:00, a quieter city after lunch, the food stalls going up in the square from about 16:00, and the sunset call to prayer over the drums.
In Ramadan the pattern shifts: sights open shorter hours, days are quiet and the city comes alive after sunset. The next Ramadan is expected to begin about 8 February 2027.
Good to know
- Be at your first sight at opening.
- Plan indoor or shaded stops for the early afternoon.
- Get to a rooftop 20 to 30 minutes before sunset.
