Which Marrakech sights are easiest with limited mobility?

From the notes we keep on each sight, the flattest are the Menara Gardens, with wide flat paths; the Koutoubia gardens; the Yves Saint Laurent museum, a modern step-free building; and Jemaa el-Fnaa's open paving.

The short answer

From the notes we keep on each sight, the flattest are the Menara Gardens, with wide flat paths; the Koutoubia gardens; the Yves Saint Laurent museum, a modern step-free building; and Jemaa el-Fnaa's open paving. The Bahia Palace is mostly level with some thresholds. Confirm access with each site before you go, since conditions change.

In more detail

In the middle are Jardin Majorelle, with level but sometimes narrow and busy paths, and Le Jardin Secret, where the garden is on one level but the tower is stairs only. At the Ben Youssef Madrasa the courtyard is at ground level, while the student cells are up steep stairs.

The hardest are El Badi Palace, with uneven ground and steep rampart steps; the Saadian Tombs, with a narrow entrance passage and a gravel garden; the tanneries, with uneven, wet ground; the Maison de la Photographie, on several floors reached by stairs; and almost every medina rooftop terrace. The souk lanes are narrow, crowded and shared with motorbikes.

Our sight notes are a starting point, not a guarantee, and we mark every one of them to be checked. Tell us how far you can walk, whether you use a wheelchair or other aid, and what you most want to see, and we will plan the order of the day, the drop-off points and the rests around it.

Good to know

  • Pair Majorelle with the step-free YSL museum.
  • Ask for a drop-off at the nearest gate to each sight.
  • Visit gardens early, before the paths get busy.
