Overview

A full-day trip from Marrakech to the laid-back fortified port of Essaouira — argan cooperative en route, fresh fish on the harbour and a walk along the Portuguese sea ramparts.

Essaouira is Marrakech's antidote: a breezy, blue-and-white Atlantic port where the pace drops and the air is full of salt and grilled sardines. The drive west takes about 2h30 across the argan plains, where we stop at a women's cooperative and the famous tree-climbing goats.

In town you have free time to wander the walled medina — a UNESCO site of whitewashed alleys and Gnaoua music — watch the blue fishing boats unload, lunch on grilled fish straight off the dock, and walk the Skala sea ramparts where Orson Welles filmed Othello and Game of Thrones shot Astapor. Back in Marrakech by evening.

  • UNESCO-listed walled medina, free to explore

  • Walk the Skala sea ramparts and Portuguese fort
  • Relaxed, breezy escape from the city heat

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "Essaouira by the Sea" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
