The Palmeraie: Marrakech's palm oasis on the northern edge

The Palmeraie is a palm oasis on the northern edge of Marrakech, traditionally dated to the Almoravids and watered by khettaras, underground channels from the foothills. Its palms number in the tens of thousands, often put at over 100,000. Go in early morning or the last hour before sunset, when the heat breaks.

An Almoravid oasis

The grove is traditionally dated to the Almoravid period, when khettaras, tunnels carrying water underground from the foothills, made it possible.
