The short answer

Yes, but not everywhere, and discreetly. Alcohol is served in licensed restaurants, hotels, rooftop bars and some riads, mostly in Gueliz and Hivernage and at the larger venues in the medina. Local cafés and the Jemaa el-Fnaa food stalls serve none, and it is harder to find during Ramadan.

In more detail

Morocco is a largely Muslim country, so alcohol sits apart from everyday life. Most neighbourhood cafés and all the food stalls of Jemaa el-Fnaa serve no alcohol at all; mint tea and fresh orange juice are the drinks of the street. Where it is served, it is in licensed places: hotel bars, restaurants in Gueliz and Hivernage, rooftop venues and some of the design riads.

A few examples from the venues we keep notes on. Dardar Rooftop, south of Jemaa el-Fnaa, runs as a restaurant and bar with sunset DJ sets. Lola Sky Lounge, on a hotel roof in Gueliz, serves house cocktails. Dai, an Italian dining room in Gueliz, has a sommelier-led wine list. Out in the Agafay desert, Kasbah d'If mixes cocktails in its bar through the evening.

Morocco produces its own wine, and some riads will offer a bottle with dinner if you ask before you arrive. During Ramadan, alcohol service may be limited outside hotels. Ramadan in 2027 is expected to begin about 8 February and run to about 9 March, depending on the moon.

Alcohol is never included on our tours. Drinks are yours to order where they are sold, and the evening food tour is a walk through street stalls and family kitchens where none is served.

Good to know

  • Ask your riad whether it serves alcohol before you book, if it matters to you.
  • Drink in licensed venues, not in the street.
  • Expect less choice in the old medina than in Gueliz and Hivernage.
