The short answer
Often, yes, from roughly December to March. The High Atlas holds snow in winter, and the peaks stay white into spring. Oukaïmeden, Morocco's highest ski station at about 2,600 metres, is roughly two hours from Marrakech up the Ourika road and is often snowy into spring. Snow on the peaks shows from Imlil too.
In more detail
On a clear winter morning you can see the snow-streaked wall of the Atlas from a Marrakech rooftop. Getting up close is a day trip: our Three Valleys day climbs to Oukaïmeden, and the Imlil and Ourika valleys both sit below snowy peaks in winter and spring.
Snow is weather, not a timetable. Some winters bring heavy falls, others very little, and a big snowfall can ice up the Imlil road or close it for a short time. We check the forecast before we set off.
Around Imlil, guided snowshoe outings run in good winters. Climbing Toubkal in snow is a different matter: it needs crampons, ice axes and mountaineering experience.
Good to know
- Bring proper warm clothes; the valleys are much colder than the city.
- Waterproof shoes help if you want to walk in snow.
- Ask us a few days ahead how the snow is looking.
- Oukaïmeden also has prehistoric rock carvings to see in the warmer months.
