The short answer
Yes, in some of the natural plunge pools at the base, mainly in the warmer months. The water is fresh and brisk. Conditions are calmest in late summer, when the flow eases; in spring, after the Atlas snowmelt, the falls run at their fullest and the water is rougher and colder. Swim only where others do.
In more detail
The pools at the foot of the cascades are a popular way to cool off in the summer heat. Stepped paths take about twenty to thirty minutes down from the clifftop cafés, passing a sequence of pools and viewpoints on the way.
Summer brings the strongest heat and the biggest crowds, and the flow is lower by late summer, which is why the pools are calmer then. Spring is the best season to see the falls, not to swim under them.
Wear swimwear under your clothes, and keep a cover-up for the walk back up through the terrace cafés. Swim only in the pools where others are swimming, and stay out of the water below the main drop.
Good to know
- Bring a towel and a dry bag for your phone.
- Wear sandals or water shoes; the pool edges are rocky.
- Leave valuables with someone in your group while you swim.
