The short answer
For most nationalities, no. Your home driving licence usually does the job for renting a car in Morocco. Bring your passport and a credit card in your own name, and expect a minimum age of 21, sometimes 23 for bigger vehicles. Check with your rental company before you travel, because their rules decide it.
In more detail
At police checkpoints you will be asked for your passport, your licence, which can be your home licence or an International Driving Permit, and the rental contract. Keep all three within reach in the glovebox, not back at the riad.
The rental contract and the insurance certificate need to stay in the car with you. A physical copy of your passport photo page is a sensible backup if your phone dies.
Self-drive also means the rules are yours to follow: 120 km/h on the motorways, fixed speed cameras, and fines paid on the spot. Keep some cash for that, and ask for a receipt.
Good to know
- Ask the rental company in writing whether they require a permit.
- Keep documents together in one folder in the glovebox.
- Morocco runs zero tolerance on alcohol for drivers.
- Download offline maps before you set off; signal drops in the mountains.
- Prefer not to drive? A private driver handles the checkpoints and the parking.
