The short answer

Marrakech is busier in August than the heat suggests. August is the Moroccan diaspora's summer season, and August 2026 was Morocco's biggest month for arrivals on record. Many European visitors still avoid the heat, so palaces can feel calmer than in spring, but the coast fills up. Book an Essaouira escape well ahead.

In more detail

Two crowds pull in different directions. Our guides note that many international visitors skip July and August because of the heat, so the medina and the palaces are often easier than in April or October. At the same time, Moroccans living abroad come home for the summer, and the calendar research notes record arrivals in August 2026, more than two million in the month.

Where you feel it most is the coast. Essaouira and the Atlantic beaches fill with Moroccan families and Europeans, so our summer guide suggests booking a coastal escape two to three months ahead for peak weeks. Marrakech riads are usually easier.

August also has three national holidays: 14, 20 and 21 August. Banks and offices close; sights mostly stay open. Whatever the crowds, the heat sets the pace: highs of about 37 °C, so plan sights early and late. Midday is when the city is emptiest, and early morning is the best time for the palaces.
