The short answer

Yes, with the right base and pace. The medina's uneven lanes, steps and riad staircases are the hard part, so many older travellers choose a hotel with a lift or a ground-floor riad room, and see the old city with a private guide and car. Avoid the July and August heat, and keep days short with a rest at midday.

In more detail

Marrakech rewards a slower pace. The gardens, Majorelle, Menara and Le Jardin Secret, are calm and shaded. A calèche loop of the ramparts covers ground without walking. Rooftop cafés give the views of the medina without the crowds, and the square is best watched from a café terrace in the early evening.

The physical challenges are real and worth planning around. The medina lanes are narrow, uneven and often stepped, and busy with mopeds and handcarts. Cars cannot reach most riad doors, so you walk the last stretch from the nearest gate, though riads often send a porter with a cart for luggage. Traditional riads usually have stairs and no lift. Hotels in Gueliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie are more likely to have lifts and step-free access, and cars pull up at the entrance.

Heat is the other factor. Older travellers, like children, feel it sooner, and the city tops 40°C in high summer. Spring and autumn are the comfortable months, and winter brings sunny days and cold nights.

Our trips are private, so older travellers set the pace: later starts, fewer stops, more time sitting down. Tell us about any mobility needs when you ask for a quote, and we plan around them.

Good to know

  • Ask for a ground-floor room or a hotel with a lift.
  • Plan mornings out and afternoons at rest.
  • Use a private car for anything beyond the medina.
