The short answer

Yes. Morocco is one of the easier countries in North Africa to travel alone, and serious crime against visitors is uncommon. What solo travellers meet is medina friction: the unasked-for guide, the stranger steering you to a shop, the vendor who will not let go. A little confidence and a few fixed habits defuse almost all of it.

In more detail

Without a companion to sanity-check against, the medina tricks matter a little more. Book your first nights and your arrival transfer before you land. Never follow a stranger who offers to lead you somewhere. Carry your riad's address, ideally written in Arabic too, for taxi drivers. Fix every price before anything starts, especially with henna artists, square performers and food stalls.

Women travelling alone draw more attention than men; men tend to be approached less and move through the lanes more freely. For everyone, the gentler places to start are Essaouira, whose small medina is hard to get lost in, and Chefchaouen, which is walkable and full of guesthouses with shared tables. Fes is the most rewarding and the hardest to do alone; hire a licensed guide for the medina there.

Marrakech asks for a day of adjustment. Jemaa el-Fna is intense and the touts around the headline sights are thicker than anywhere else. Give yourself a day to find your feet and it becomes a good city to wander alone, especially in the quieter quarters off the main lanes.

Good to know

  • Riad breakfasts and rooftops are the easiest places to meet other travellers.
  • Ask riads for a single-room rate rather than assuming you pay for a double.
  • Keep a small daily cash float in an easy pocket and the rest zipped away.
