The short answer
In a supervised car park outside the walls. The medina lanes are too narrow for cars, so drivers leave the car with a guardian (gardien) at a car park near one of the gates and walk in. Ask your riad which car park is closest; many riads will send someone to meet you there and help with your bags.
In more detail
Car parks with a guardian are the norm outside every historic medina in Morocco, and they are paid by the day. In Marrakech you will see motorbikes and donkeys sharing lanes that a small car could not enter.
Riads routinely manage the handover at the car park: a member of staff or a porter with a cart meets you, takes the bags and walks you in. Arrange it by message before you set off so someone is waiting.
If you are hiring a car for a road trip, consider collecting it on the day you leave Marrakech, not the day you arrive. The car is little use in the city, and it saves days of parking.
Good to know
- Agree the parking fee with the guardian when you arrive.
- Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car.
- Staying in Gueliz or Hivernage? Cars pull up right outside the hotel.
