Why Agafay Desert
The Agafay is the answer whenever the Sahara is just too far: Marrakech's pocket desert, a rolling, rock-strewn moonscape barely 40 minutes from the city with the snow-capped High Atlas filling the skyline. There are no sand dunes here — it's a stone desert of khaki hills — but at dusk, with a lantern-lit camp, a camel cut against a ridge and the Atlas flushing pink, it conjures most of the romance for a sliver of the travel time. For anyone tight on days in Marrakech, an Agafay evening or overnight is the simplest way to taste the desert.
What to see
Lantern-lit luxury camps laying on Moroccan dinners as the Atlas catches fire — the quintessential Agafay evening.
Short golden-hour rides across the khaki hills, gentle enough for first-timers and families alike.
Faster runs over the rocky tracks for anyone after more than a leisurely stroll before dinner.
An en-suite tented camp for a night of stargazing within easy reach of Marrakech — and no nine-hour Sahara drive required.

If you can't free up three days for the Sahara, absolutely. The Agafay hands you a desert sunset, a camp and a camel ride just 40 minutes from Marrakech — ideal for a short stay — as long as you go in knowing it's rocky hills rather than sand dunes.
It's a genuine desert, but one of rolling stone and khaki hills rather than Saharan sand. It's striking at sunset and gloriously convenient; for the classic dunes you'll need Erg Chebbi at Merzouga or Erg Chigaga, both a long way south.
